I am having to review my knowledge of history concerning the reasons for the American Revolution. I always thought one of the motivating factors was the fact that Americans were not interested in royalty and a royal family. The colonists and first Americans did not see a royal family as anything they needed.
Fast forward to the 20th Century. Here come the Kennedy’s. They were referred to as American royalty. If the Bush family had been Democrats, they too would have been probably referred to as American royalty. Today we have the Clintons with people slobbering all over Hillary and Bill. The latest member of the family to step into the spotlight is Chelsea. She is working on television although she has no training or talent for the job. There is talk that she might run for office.
The latest royalty to appear on the scene is Caroline Kennedy. When she thought of running for Senator from New York two years ago, she shot her own chances by the manner in which she answered questions including “you know” and much hesitation. It also became known that she had not always voted. It appears that she will be our next Ambassador to Japan. Wonder how her Japanese is.
What these families represent is what happens in human societies. A group comes into power and gradually there develops an elite group that is “better” than the common people. This happened in Russia. The 2% who were members of the Communist Party lived a lot better than the average Russian. They had all available benefits and comforts. This scenario was the same in Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Communist Cuba.
Now, are the elite in the United States as evil as the Nazis and Communists? Of course not! Our elite do good deeds and talk about the need to look out for the poor. However, they continue to be very comfortable and work very hard to make laws and pass regulations that are for the good of the “average citizen.” Somehow or other these same laws do not apply to the elite. They are the beautiful people. A prime example of this principle is the exemption from Obamacare that has been extended to Congress. It turns out that the cost of Obamacare was going to really hurt the folks in Washington. It appears to be irrelevant if the cost of this health plan is too much for the average Joe.
When the same laws don’t apply to everyone, a country is on the way to becoming an oligarchy.
